At this stage tuition will be available on Thursday and/or Friday afternoons. My music studio is situated in Kingston House, 123 Hone heke Rd, Kerikeri.

Waka ama success

10 students travelled along with Matua Danny to Lake Ngatu in Waipapakauri for a secondary schools waka ama regional championship. Our students were invited as an opportunity to compete with the older students from secondary, and gain experience in competitive paddling.

They reported a successful day, achieving bronze medals in both boys and girls events.

Well done to all who participated, and thanks Danny for opening up this opportunity for us to attend.

Te Whakapapa ō Ngati Rehia

A massive thanks to parent Kiri Walsh who has shared her artistic brilliance and created these images representing the hapu of Ngati Rehia.

We've entered these sketches into the Resene Wall Worthy competition (https://www.knzb.org.nz/paint-new-zealand-beautiful/wall-worthy-competition/) in the hope of winning some funding and support to have this mural recreated on our school in the near future.

This mural reflects the whakapapa of the local hapu Ngati Rehia. These are the descendants of Tareha a famous Ngā Puhi ancestor who was prominent in the very first interactions between Maori and Pakeha in the early 1800's, just down the road at Rangihoua, the famous site where Marsden Cross is located. Tareha was also a significant Rangatira around the time of the signing of the treaty of Waitangi.

Ngati Rehia ancestors have been attending our school for close to 100 years, the location of the school having moved from the nearby Ngati Rehia Village of Te Tii to just up the road at our current site over 60 years ago. Today we acknowledge the mana whenua and their place in our school.

The history, the wahi tapu and the stories of Ngati Rehia are significant elements of the culture and learning in our school. Our strategic plan embeds the goal to ensure all of our students, of all cultures understand the whakapapa of Ngati Rehia. This mural will go along way towards supporting this goal in our school and community.

I am a Thinker

Our Learner Profile focus for the past two weeks has been Thinker. We were very pleased to acknowledge children across the school who have stood out as thinkers in their learning over this time. At today's school hui we presented those learners with their certificates.

The IB Learner Profile identifies thinkers as those who use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.

Our Ko Wai Au behaviour values identifies Thinkers as students who act to keep themselves and others safe at all times. Safety encompasses so many aspects of how we behave in the school community.

Congratulations to these students for standing up as Thinkers, Kai whakaaro. Mauri ora!

Odd Socks to show your support

Sunday the 21st March is World Down Syndrome Day. This week teachers will be talking to students about Down Syndrome helping to give them an understanding of what it is. As a community we love to celebrate this day with Jasper J.

As it falls on Sunday we will be celebrating this on Friday the 19th March by inviting students to wear odd socks. Odd socks were chosen as a symbol because chromosomes are shaped like socks and those with Down Syndrome have an extra one.

We look forward to seeing all those odd socks!
