Better Start Literacy in Rooms 1 and 2

2022 has seen a great deal of success for children in Rooms 1 and 2 as we have rolled out the Better Start Literacy approach. Our teachers have undergone extensive professional learning during the year, supported by our RTLB Nicola.

The document here explains what it is and summarises the impact of the BSLA for tamariki across Aotearoa.

Student action in Room 2 and 3

“Access to equal opportunities shapes communities and makes a difference in the world”

This was the central idea for the 'Sharing the Planet' inquiry conducted in Rooms 2 and 3.

Children looked into equal opportunities for natural resources and for education. Soon, it became clear that some children don’t have the same access to water, food and toys like others.

Aliyah, Anaia and Flynn decided to write letters to the students and their parents asking them for donations of toys and food to help families in need.

It didn’t take long, and the first toy donations came in, the team was overjoyed! A big thank you to all children and families who donated toys. Now, we will be looking for the right charity to donate these toys to.

Northland Pest Control Wānanga/Meeting

Last Sunday saw the running of the latest pest control meeting for interested groups around Northland. The Bay of Islands International Academy took along members of the trapping group to present to the meeting about what they have been doing to manage the population of pests in the school grounds.

Details and a video of their presentation is below.

We are excited to be involved early in an initiative to rid the Purerua Peninsula of all pests in an effort to protect and grow the kiwi and native bird communities living here.

Learning through the Transdisciplinary Themes

If you are looking for more understanding of how your children learn at the Bay Academy ...

We set aside specific daily learning time dedicated to building reading and writing literacy and maths numeracy. These are central to student success in all other areas of learning, and for life.

Unlike lots of schools that treat subjects as separate blocks of learning our students learn through units of inquiry (6 per year). Subject knowledge (science; social studies; arts; physical, social and personal education), Skills (thinking, research, social, communication and self-management) and the Learner Profile are integrated sensibly through each unit of inquiry. This is known as a transdisciplinary approach.

These themes engage the learning community in rich dialogues and ongoing collaboration to build an understanding of themselves, their wider community and the world. The expected outcome is students who take charge of their learning and who take action reflecting what they have learned.

Designed to have enduring value regardless of where you are in the world, or who your student is, the six themes provide guidance for what students will inquire into.

To see some of the results of student learning in the Units of Inquiry please check your HERO App, under Sharing My Learning.

Te Tai Tokerau Kapa Haka Festival

Great to have Crystal and Rawi take a van load to Whangarei to support the local high school kapa haka group in the festival.

This was an opportunity for our rangatahi, young people to observe (and enjoy) the standard of performance achievable by them and to set their expectations. Learning at its best.

Homes Reflect Lifestyle Influences

Room 3 Action takers: Phoenix RT, Patrick, Arran, Oakley, Titan, Elijah

As part of their current unit of inquiry into Where we are in place and time with the Central Idea of: Homes reflect lifestyle influences and change over time, these students have initiated a project: Building a teepee at school.

Action: The boys watched a video about making a simple teepee with plants growing up on the side. They discussed where they could find a good spot for this at school and went to find the site. They also brainstormed which plants would work best at this time of the year. After that they made a list of materials they needed. They asked Matua Chris for permission to build it.

Phoenix then asked his mum Liz for help and sent her an email with the list. Liz came in and built the teepee with the boys.

Success: The team built a great teepee with peas and beans which will grow up on the side over the summer! It is fenced off at the moment to protect the plants in the growing stage.

Student Achievement updates (YTD)

We are really pleased to let you know about achievement at school in the area of literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (mathematics), year to date (YTD) 2020.

While our IB inquiry style of learning is rich with engaging content covering all aspects of a diverse and future focussed curriculum, we are dedicated to building the levels of literacy and numeracy that will set every child up with the ability and confidence to access all the learning available to them in their world.

Our 2020 published goals for the Bay Academy state that we target 90% of students performing at or above the expected curriculum levels in all of reading, writing and math. This is a challenging yet, we believe, realistic target. It goes without saying that we would want 100%.

I hope you agree with me that the results below are cause for us to be very satisfied that children are progressing extremely well at the Bay Academy. In the year we have had this is massive credit to our teaching team, including teacher aides. Their dedication and commitment to continuous improvement is amazing.

Reading

Year to date we are on target at 90%. Initiatives in the school including Quick60 and StepsWeb are currently targeted at accelerating those in the 10%. A renewed focus on phonics in the early years is beginning to show excellent results for children.

Writing

Most schools will tell you that writing is their biggest challenge. We are tracking below our school goals in writing, but we are far from resting on these results. We understand that writing is about communication and includes a variety of expression, including oral and digital. Creating opportunities for children to communicate about what is of interest and relevance to them is constant learning for us as a teaching team.

Maths

Maths progress across the school has been very satisfying. 89% performing at or above expectation represents a strong result so far this year.

Kerikeri Men's Shed Helping Out!

The Kerikeri Men's Shed visited the Bay Academy equipped with their tools and an appetite to support our students building bird houses for the pollination garden. Students are hoping to bring a richer bird life back into the gardens, which have recently been developed into our own marae where students and staff pōwhiri and welcome new visitors to the school.

The students loved working with these talented men who demonstrated skills and helped the students complete four new bird houses ready to go up in the gardens.

The students acknowledged the support of these generous men with our school haka. The men themselves shared how much they enjoyed their visit and how great the students were to work with.
