Soccer Skills

James Coleman of the Northern Regional Football Association offered our children the opportunity of joining their soccer skills programme in schools. All the children were involved in sessions learning and practicing a range of kicking and passing skills. These sessions were expertly run by Pete from the NRF. With the start of the FIFA football world cup this was an opportunity to grow children's interest in the 'beautiful game'.

Weetbix Try Challenge

What a wonderful day organised by Mrs Anschober in Room 3. Lots of the children, with the help of parents and whānau who delivered bikes to school, competed in a tryathlon here at school.

Covid has disrupted the normal running of this annual event and so the decision was made to give it a go ourselves.

A big thanks to all the parents and whānau who came along to support. It was a great afternoon, despite the weather.

Thanks to Constable Rob of the Kerikeri police who had come along a few days earlier to help the children with biking skills and safety.

Kerikeri and Districts Cross Country Results - 8 - 12 y/o

We want to congratulate all the students who took part in the cross country held yesterday at Takou Bay Road Landcorp Farm. Great to see all the Kerikeri Schools in attendance and they were joined by a couple of schools from Whangarei.

What a challenging course it was.

2.4 km's of hill climbs, downhill sprints and wading through knee deep mud. All this and the usual blustery and cold westerly conditions which seem to grace the event every year. Not for the faint hearted.

In saying that there was no sign of any hesitation on the part of the children and young people competing.

We want to congratulate all those who participated with lots of gutsy performances and perseverance. A special mention to the place getters from all attending schools.

From the Bay Academy the following students participated:

Avalon - 8 y/o girls

Louie, Ethan, Patrick, Logan, Mahi and Flynn - 8 y/o boys

Eleanor - 9 y/o girls FIRST PLACE, also running, Lani and Leslie

Arran and Oakley - 9 y/o boys

Amalfi - 10 y/o girls THIRD PLACE, also running, Rita

Dejan and Julien - 11 y/o boys

Whitiora - 12 y/o girls

Bosco - 12 y/o boys FIRST PLACE

A big thank you to the parents and whānau who supported with transport and were there on the sidelines to cheer on the competitors. Mauri Ora!

Cross Country Results

The results of the school cross country are below. We want to congratulate all the place getters recorded on the attached list. Many of these children will go on to compete in the Kerikeri and Districts Junior (3oth June at the Bay Academy) and Senior Cross Country (21st June at Takou Bay) events. We wish them the best for their efforts.

We encouraged all the children at school to participate in the school event. I was so proud that 100% of children who were present and were able, also participated. This speaks volumes about their positive attitude and willingness to give it a go. I know how much some of these children would have preferred not to.

We encouraged all the children to set a target of pushing themselves just beyond the limits that thought they were capable of. So many did this, and the sense of achievement and pride as they crossed the finish line was heart warming.

A big thanks to staff, students, parents and whānau for their help and support. We hope you agree that it was a fun day and well worth while for a whole lot of reasons.

Just an update regarding upcoming dates for cross country events, at the school and regionally.

We will hold a cross country for our whole school in week 6 (next week) on Friday afternoon 11th June.

The Kerikeri and Districts inter-school cross country championships for Year 5 - 8 will be held on Monday 21st June, with a postponement day of the 23rd if required. Children will be invited to put their names forward at school to compete in that event. Parent support will be welcomed as we travel to Takou Bay for this.

The Bay of Islands International Academy will be hosting the Kerikeri and Districts Junior Cross Country on Wednesday 30th June at school. This event is for competitors up to Year 4. Schools attending to date are Kerikeri Primary, Riverview and Springbank School.

We welcome you to come along and support your children on these days. Details on the organisation for events will be sent out well beforehand.

Waka ama success

10 students travelled along with Matua Danny to Lake Ngatu in Waipapakauri for a secondary schools waka ama regional championship. Our students were invited as an opportunity to compete with the older students from secondary, and gain experience in competitive paddling.

They reported a successful day, achieving bronze medals in both boys and girls events.

Well done to all who participated, and thanks Danny for opening up this opportunity for us to attend.

Keeping the School Van?

Our van is such an important resource for supporting the many trips and events we participate in, away from school. The Board has decided that due to financial pressure in 2020 we must return the van and try and get by without it. A number of significant donation agreements with the school expired in 2019, leaving us to manage a tight annual budget this year.

We are seeking other options to try to keep the van. We need to raise approximately $9000 to cover lease costs, insurance, maintenance and fuel. We are handing this over to the community to see what ideas there might be to achieve our goal. Maybe its business sponsorship, either by one or more organisations?, maybe it's a use agreement at times when the van is not being used by school groups?, or maybe it's just someone who shares our belief that the van is a valuable resource, and wants to help?, we have an open mind to any and all suggestions.

Please be in touch with Matua Chris principal@boi.ac.nz or 4079749

2019 Cross Country/Fun Run

Yesterday, 5 June 2019, we held our whole school Cross Country day. The weather was kind to us, clearing the torrential rain for a clear, sunny time for our students to participate. The school spirit was high with students, parents and staff cheering and celebrating all students along the way. Students showed outstanding sportsmanship by going back to run alongside their peers/siblings even after they had finished the course. With mandarins supplied by Kainui Orchards, the students were refuelled, and there was an overall pride and joy reflected in the students who obtained such a fantastic achievement. The IB Profile of Balanced truly shone. Well done all!

Thank you to our wonderful teaching staff who assisted on the day, but a special mention of thanks goes to Catherine, Toni, Sharon and Danny. You are the stars of our school. Thank you!
Attached is the list of the placings of the students with the distances and quantity of laps run. The inter-school Cross Country is the next step, where we would like to send students to represent our school. The students aged 4-7 will participate at Springbank School on 21 June 2019, while the students aged 8-12 will participate at Kapiro Landcorp Station, 100m down Takou Bay Road, 12 km north of Waipapa on 18 June 2019. I would like to offer the opportunity for students placed 1-4 to participate in the inter-schools competition. These competitions will be with other students from the Kerikeri District in the same age categories.

If you or your child have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Samantha Roessler.

2019 Swimming Sports

Last week we enjoyed the last of the summer swimming programme with both our own school sports and the Kerikeri inter-schools competition run in the same week.

Many students put their names forward to compete in our school event, and with the generous help of our parents we were able to get all the children down to Kawakawa pool. The opportunity to compete and build confidence in the same pool as the inter-school competition was a bonus.

We want to acknowledge all the following students for their participation and performances on the day across freestyle, breast stroke and back stroke. In the girls Aimee, Chilli, Taungarangi, Kaia, Kia, Eva, Shanae, Keira and Hannah-May all took. placings. In the boys Mikaera, Te Awa, Reef, Tyron and Bosco were the place getters.

To the inter-schools competition Bay Academy swimmers performed with distinction. Kaia Derbyshire took out 1st place in all 3 categories of freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke. Mikaera Porter took out firsts in the breast and back stroke and a second in freestyle. Other swimmers to perform well and gain placings in their events were Eva Wyman, Aimee Croucher, and Bosco and Amalfi. Thanks again go the the parents who assisted teacher Sam Roessler to give the students this great opportunity.

Waka Ama and Surfing begin

Students in Room 5/6 with Mrs Ross have begun their Friday programme of Waka Ama at Lake Manuwai. Led by Danny, our multi talented caretaker, and Tuppy his wife, students will learn about the culture of Waka ama and its relevance and meaning in the community. There will be lots of opportunity for paddling and competing as the term progresses.

Our Friday afternoon surfing programme also began last Friday at Matauri Bay. 21 brave students and a group of equally brave parents and teachers took to the water with surfboards in hand. On the day the conditions were not totally suitable for great surfing but Whaea Xani was happy to have the chance to get the organisation settled in for another surfing term. This term surfing will swing between Taronui Beach close to the school and Matauri.

Inline Hockey

During term 2 Rooms 5 & 6 were taught the skills of Inline Skating, this term they have progressed to learn the skills of Inline Hockey. Every Friday morning they travel to the Stingrays skating rink at Harmony Lane, Waipapa to have an hour and a half lesson with Sophie.

Each week the skaters are taught a new skill and also go over skills already learnt. To start with the skaters had to become familiar with holding a hockey stick and skate at the same time, this proved challenging for some however they soon learnt the correct hockey stance. Once comfortable with skating with a stick, soft pucks were introduced. The skaters then realised why they had to wear knee pads and a helmet, soon it no longer mattered that they didn't look cool.
Time was spent learning how to correctly pass the puck backwards and forwards to each other, using the stick. It's actually a lot harder than you think to get the puck to go where you want it to go.
Last week saw the skaters put all of their skills into practice as Sophie allowed them to play their first game. It was great to see the skaters flying around the rink with big smiles on their faces, having gone from the start of Term 3 learning to skate to now being able to manoeuvre a puck around the opposition to score a goal!
Inline Hockey has definitely been a much needed confidence boost for some of the skaters. It is a great all round activity for fitness, co-ordination and balance. If you have not given it a go before, I highly recommend you do.
