Teachers as learners

During 2022 teachers Sarah Ross and Doris Anschober have been participating in a Hybrid Learning professional learning journey with a group of other teachers from Te Tai Tokerau. On Saturdy they presented their findings to the Ministry of Education at a hui in Bream Bay.

The Bay Academy was selected along with Bream Bay College as the only two Northland schools to receive funding to research techniques to engage with children not in school due to circumstances outside their control. This was a project designed to open the doors to the classroom and to learning for children away from school. A number of parents also contributed to the research carried out by our teachers.

The Ministry will seek to share the learning from the project widely across the schools in Te Tai Tokerau with a view to continuing to engage with a high number of children currently disengaged with their schools and learning.

We are very grateful for the dedicated work put in by Sarah and Doris in an already busy programme. Their findings and those of others in the project will serve to inform how we continue to improve the way learning is made available to students and their families into the future.

You can read more about the project in this blog post https://futuremakers.nz/2022/11/20/8-insights-for-achieving-resilience/.

Covid-19 Level 2 pending announcement

Kia ora koutou school community,

As a result of the latest update from our Prime Minister regarding Covid-19 in the community I can confirm the following:

1. If LEVEL 2 is announced on Monday 11th May (next Monday), all children will be able to return to school.
2. If LEVEL 2 is announced children will return on Monday 18th May.
3. We currently remain open under Level 3 to take your children should you need to send them due to the nature of your work or their supervision at home. Currently we have 2 children attending and I have been notified of 2 further joining them on Monday 11th May. So that I can arrange necessary teacher support and bus transportation please let me know as soon as possible if you intend sending children to school.

The survey linked here has a few short questions asking for your feedback on learning online and your future intentions, https://forms.gle/hACvtFwue54Mz8hR7. Your responses help us to know how to provide you with the best support possible.

Latest Information for School Reopening 29th April

Kia ora koutou,

Tomorrow, Wednesday 29th, the Bay Academy will re-open under Level 3 Covid-19 conditions. We are expecting 6 students at school. All remaining students will be learning ONLINE, from home. We will have only 4 staff on site.

Teachers are well prepared to support online learning. We have supplied all students who requested them with school owned devices for learning. Students are expected to engage with the learning provided by teachers. Students who choose not to engage with learning online will be considered absent from school and will be marked as such. In this case, unless we hear from parents, children will be recorded on the roll as unjustified absence.

The bus will run at the usual time tomorrow. The Bus company are monitoring the usage of buses and will update us daily on any changes to the timetable. I am required to complete a register of all students travelling on the bus each day.

Of paramount importance is health and safety. We are putting in place measures to ensure the safety of your children, of all staff and of visitors to the school. We acknowledge the implications of taking this threat too lightly, particularly in relation to our most at risk family and whānau.

We acknowledge that this might be a difficult time for your family and whānau and offer whatever assistance we can to make it easier if we possibly can.

Ngā mihinui kia koutou katoa

Stay safe and well.
